Introduction:

the soundproofing of a PC are taking each day a more important role. Increasingly manufacturers are more concerned to provide silent power supplies, microprocessors with low power consumption, highly efficient heat sinks that work almost passive or fan at low speed, etc.

Many of us have put us to silence our PC and we ended up arriving at the same point: almost nothing makes noise in our PC, we have almost a liability along with a few fans at very low rpm 12cm. But there is an element that upsets our desired silence: the hard disk. Desktop hard drives generally run at 7200 rpms and at idle they sound like a fan, but their sound is considerably higher than the 12 cm silent fans at 500-700 rpms. They also produce an annoying noise when they search on the surface of the disc ("seek"), and this noise is even more pronounced than idle.

So for us really cranky noise is intended to silence the problem. The first step to getting a hard drive making noise is not appropriately chosen disk. The starting point is important. Here are two options:

- Portable Hard Drives (2.5 "): Currently 5400rpms portable disks are as quiet as we can find. They have two drawbacks: They are far less rapid than those of desktops and capabilities of these discs are quite far from the desktop (you can find up to 160GB notebook, desktop while there are 500GB and even older). They also tend to be more expensive.

- Records desktop (3.5 "): They have higher capacities, faster and cheaper. But they make more noise. This guide focuses on the way to silence these discs (although it also applies to 2.5 "disks). It is important to choose a disk to which they are quieter to get the best results. The quieter considered to date in this guide are the Samsung (401LJ, 501LJ) and WD (series ks). And this is where the solution proposed in this guide: encapsulate the disks in an aluminum case with gel bags ("coolpacks").

The system proposed in this guide is based on the use of an aluminum box plus a coolpacks. The aim of the coolpacks is to soundproof the disc, absorbing and transmitting the heat generated while the aluminum case. The purpose of the aluminum housing is to keep the disc and compact coolpacks, and transmit the heat from the outside coolpacks.

This guide is not going to talk solutions trade, but only the solution "do it yourself" with coolpacks. There are some users who have made comparisons SPCR in SPCR forums any business case and solution with coolpacks eg here.

In general the consensus is that business solutions are achieved at lower temperatures, but with better soundproofing coolpacks achieved. The temperatures obtained with different commercial and coolpacks solutions are also shown in this one compared to LPS .

risk Warning:

This solution entails a certain risk, because the "coolpacks" contains a jelly-like fluid when broken could damage the hard disk. The risk is not high if you do things carefully. If you choose coolpack properly, so that the liquid is too thick, then it is unlikely that the fluid reaches the disk even in case of breakage. HDD Temperatures:

Coolpacks:

Possible problems

One problem that has been a user of LPS that was using the boxes with coolpacks is the problem of condensation .

Condensation occurs when an object is a temperature below room temperature. Then the water particles in the atmosphere form condensed gas in liquid form on the surface of the object. As the packs are heated more slowly than the box, while the temperature is not reached equilibrium yet the case. The coolpacks are colder than the temperature of the box. If the humidity is high, condensation may occur.

As for temperatures in my system that has fans at low rpms (Figure ~ 350rpms, micro ~ 500 RMPS, safe 500rpms ~, ~ 500rpms source) I did the following tests:

1) The box with a small Hammond HD401LJ at the bottom is usually at a temperature of 32-34 º C (ambient temperature of 22-24 º C).

2) The two-disc box with a Seagate 7200.7 160GB HD401LJ and in the middle of the P180 (I had to remove the fan), makes the temperature of the disks after 3 hours doing hard copies at 47 º C in the seagate and 45 º C in the Samsung (ambient temperature of 22-24 º C).

The soundproofing in the two-disc box is impressive, even less is heard in the small box, I guess because of the 6 packs that make missing.

In this test the temperatures are a bit high, but it is not surprising. The seagate is hot enough (before encapsulated when they had suspended with rubber and is placed at 48 º C), and I have no fan getting air into the cooler box with discs, and that only I have a 12cm fan taking air out of the box to 500rpms. Yet I believe that temperatures are not dangerous for those records as they are within the range specified by the manufacturer.

Besides, I have the intuition that the hotter disk is dominant and the temperature of the whole box is determined by this record. Later I'll try with two disks samsung in the box to check if the temperatures are lower.
